Well, we don't actually have to fade to a color at all. If we don't do that, then my concern #2 becomes moot. In this case, all that's really needed is to further improve the text contrast against light or busy backgrounds. @richardbowen in the VDG room suggested maybe adding an outline to the text, in addition to or instead of a shadow. I think that could work well.
