Jeremy, you were right! It was a bug in Oracle VirtualBox. In fact, I just installed VirtualBox version 4.2.4 and the mouse wheel is now working fine, just as one would expect all mouse buttons/wheel should work, without having to tweak any settings. Thanks for your reply.
