Funny fact: You're wrong about Mac OS X. The OS X equivalent of a systray in in the top right within the Mac global menu bar. What OS X does, however, is to allow to close all windows of an app and still leave the app running which is indicated by a glowing spot in the Dock (a triangle in the past).
