@IlyaBizyaev suggested using the MozJPEG encoder at https://squoosh.app/ and the results are fantastic. I can detect no difference in appearance whatsoever from normal viewing distances (i.e. not zoomed in to 500%) and the total size is now down to 8 Mb. I used a 90% quality level to try to keep the visual fidelity as much as possible.
