Yes, I like the "use case oriented research". We do a lot of this here at my company before the designers create the products for us. It's also important also to be aware that sometimes even the user don't know exactly what he wants. Let me explain it.... Sometimes the user says "I want A" but in fact if you expose to him what can be done he says "ow yeah, I didn't know that this could be done, this is much better" hehe. It usually happens with "almost geek" users or users that are a little bit advanced...so it's important to take care of these cases. From my pov, plasma developers usually work just like you described and we should go with this approach for plasma-mid too ;).
