Actually, GD2 can be compiled (after a patch) to read/write GIFs with LZW compression (the LZW algorithm is the root of the legal iffyness), but (AFAIK) you're only legally allowed to enable it if you live outside the US & Canada. AFAIK only FreeBSD's ports system does this atm.
