the php parser does not return any whitespace between the <?php ?> tags
unless youn use print or echo.
i wouldn't use:

as that would remove all your normal single spaces as well.
if this is really a an issue use regular expressions to replace 2 or
more spaces with single spaces. see preg_replace()
