Here's the code I use to validate emails:
function check_email($email)
{
global $email;
$regex="^([a-z0-9_]|\\-|\\.)+@(([a-z0-9_]|\\-)+\\.)+[a-z]{2,4}$";
return eregi($regex, $email, $trash);
}
