[PHP] about file permissions + cuteftp

hi,
how come when i make a dir thus

mkdir($basedir,0777);

cute can't then chmod or delete said dir.
also vice versa : when i create a dir with cute
with 777 access php can't do anything with it.
it's very annoying.
