It's probably better to do as Brian suggests: use regular expressions so
that you can avoid cases like
[b onMouseOver="executesomejavascript"]Test[/b]
With something like
$bbcode_string = preg_replace("/\[(\/?)b\]/i", "<$1b>", $string);
