If you are using a Unix/Linux type server for your local system, sendmail (or an equivalent such as exim, smail, qmail, etc) will almost certainly be installed and running. Then you can send mail to <your_username>@localhost and assuming your sendmail/exim configuration is reasonably standard, it should work.
