Everyone's mileage will vary on this one, but I met compiling PHP as a DSO with a great deal of frustration in trying to get it to recognize MySQL's libraries, even though PHP provides its own. Upon sharing this frustration, I took consolation with others who had "been there", and we all found salvation in installing the static mod_php (and Apache is still welcome to accept any other DSO).
