This is probably impossible, for legal reasons. Gif-Support had to be dropped from GDlib because of a changed license. Old releases of gd did support GIFs, but don't expect any more official releases of GD including GIF-Support. You could try to hack GIF-support into GD yourself. There is a "patched" version of GD 1.8x which supports GIF-functions as well as these for PNG, but it is illegal. In the USA it is, at least.
