Well, it boiled down to zlib.so causing the segfault. As soon as I removed that module, everything worked. Recompiling just the zlib.so module yielded the same result: pear segfaults.

   So now the question is: is it zlib's fault, or is it pear?

At this point I've accomplished what I needed, but it doesn't actually fix the problem: enabling zlib will cause pear to segfault.
