I've never had any problems with ending classes with numbers, actually using it on a site at the moment that highlights keywords, by enclosing said words within <span class="highlightx"> tags, where x is a number. No bugs in any browsers we've tested: IE, Fx, Opera, Safari, Chrome, Konqueror.
