In MySQL 5+ something like this may work with your code:

SELECT *, IF(UNIX_TIMESTAMP(CURRENT_TIMESTAMP) -
UNIX_TIMESTAMP(post_date) < 172800, 1, 0)
AS is_new FROM tbl
