I don't use a framework either. However, I do have a collection of routines (many stolen from Rob, David et al on this list) that I use for specific needs. That collection grows daily.
You might try what I do, which is to review every problem presented on this list and make a demo of the solution. It's a lot of work, but you'll build a library of stuff that you can use over and over.
