I've usually resorted to using Javascript:
function close_window($msg='')
{
echo "<script language='Javascript'>\n";
if (!empty($msg)) {
echo "alert(\"$msg\");\n";
}
echo "self.close();\n";
echo "</script>\n";
exit;
}
