I think www-authenticate is what the server sends to the browser, not
the other way around.

I'm guessing that since it's called PHP_AUTH_USER and PHP_AUTH_PW in
PHP, that you would need to send:

GET / HTTP/1.0
AUTH_USER: $username
PATH_PW: $password
Host: example.com
