sounds like you might have hit a bug, check the bug DB and if you
can't find anything report a bug (that fact that you have a small reproduce
script is very good) - don't forget to mention all the specifics of your setup
(obviously?)
but before you do all that give php 4.4.1 a whirl and see if your woes
disappear?
The output is:
10240
6144
which makes up exactly the magic 16384 bytes. So it's certainly not a
qmail issue.
