As a PHP security advocate for the last few years, I can tell you that Curt is absolutely correct. In fact, poor open source applications written in PHP are the top reason why PHP is considered insecure by the programming community at large. This is a myth that is very difficult to dispel, and it shows how powerful perception can be.
