Which route would y'all take, and (more importantly) which would you recommend to someone at my capable-but-not-expert level? Remember that I'll come back to the list when I get stumped ;-)
I'd talk with the owner of the control panel, tell them what you need, and see if they will:
a) implement it for you
b) provide you with enough knowledge of what happens behind the scenes so that you can build it yourself
