I'm not so sure it's an entirely horrible idea for a university to focus on
one area over another. I went to art school - so I'm sure I'll be burned
at the stake for having comments :P But a great deal of my friends who
took comp sci or comp eng in uni are greatly unemployed - why you
ask? Their school taught them how to use, program in, administer, and
setup Linux Red Hat 7.3, then 8.0, and they just got a glimpse of 9.0
before graduation ... cool right? Funny thing is that a surprising number
of businesses and corporations would much rather you be proficient in some
manner of Microsoft product - the reason? If it breaks there's someone you
can call for help.
If your Windows Server blows up - you dial a very expensive Microsoft
number to get help. If your Linux server running some manner of PHP script
blows up, you send out countless emails to mailing lists hoping someone out
there in the open source community has had to deal with something similar
to what you're doing now.
By no means am I saying that MS is a good thing, but from a corporate
atmosphere - it's very difficult to get the upper management types to see
why anything other than Windows 98 should be on a computer.
Although, I say go for making Linux a good thing ... goto netcraft.com -
there you can type in the names of any of your favorite websites,
commercial or corporate, or anything really and it'll tell you what web
server their running and wether or not PHP is installed (well, in most
cases anyways). The best would be to find out what the favorite sites of
the boss-types are and just hope they're all run by PHP :P

It is disappointing to me that a university exists that focuses on where the
money is rather than educating students. While I disagree with their
prediction
of the future, I think it is irrelevant anyway. If they were to choose PHP
based on its promising future, it would be a better choice but for the wrong
reason (the "right" choice is to let the students choose their platform, since
it should be irrelevant to the lessons being taught).
Of course, my argument is moot if you are speaking of a vocational school or
something that is intended to teach applied skills, but I wouldn't call such a
school a university. These types of educational institutions are great, but
they have a much different purpose.
I would rather a university let the students choose their own platform, since
people are going to be most passionate about learning in an environment that
they choose. Besides, as I mentioned above, the platform should be irrelevant.
If you want to teach students to learn to program for the Web, you have failed
if they cannot apply what they have learned to any language - PHP, mod_perl,
ColdFusion, Java, etc.
To answer your original question, I suppose you can search zend.com for some
sort of comparison, but I am afraid you may be wasting your effort. It sounds
like your university has some fundamental misnuderstandings about education,
and that is going to be difficult to resolve.
Good luck.

That's a fair comparison, I suppose, and it's probably why I prefer open source
in general. I prefer shops where people take responsibility for their own work;
they're less likely to have the political culture that is counterproductive to
the creative thinkers and developers who like to get things accomplished rather
than worry about who to blame (if you plan to fail, you will). Of course, there
are exceptions both ways, but I'll go with the odds.
However, my point was that the original poster was speaking about an
educational institute, so they should be teaching the students to be the expert
who answers the Microsoft phone number or the Unix developer who never has to
call.

I guess you could always make the argument that, to get Microsoft's
attention and get bribes^H^H^H^H^H^Hhelp from the monopoly, you have to
threaten to break out of it. :-(
You might also mention that, if they want to buy support, RedHat and
other Linux companies are now selling support.

Shoot, Mac OS X is a pretty decent buy, too, and ASP does not run native
on Apple's systems.

Good luck, but don't be surprised if the road is longer and harder than
it ought to be. Make sure you can make a living while you're fighting.

I am thankful that I work in an "open-source" shop! Having said that....
I think that there are more (based on my experience) "mixed"
environments...and even if we are an open-source environment M$ runs on
the desktops because corporate is comfortable with that. Those of us in
technical operations are expected to have a certain level of proficiency
in both environments. It would be my guess that there are lots of
organizations similarly configured....*nix based servers, open-source
DBs, etc connected to desktops running all varieties of M$ products.
Now, running these things side-by-side gives us a tremendous amount of
perspective, the strengths and weaknesses readily discernable for each
of the environments involved. The key is to learn how to flex the muscle
of each so that the collaborative environment is as strong and efficient
as possible.

Hi all,
I'm having problem sending MIME Mail using PHP (SMTP) to netscape.net
emails,
it didn't display the content of html, (although i've filled the
content-type with text/html),
instead, it display the garbled text.
I've tried to encode the message with 7bit and base64 encoding, but those
don't work either ;(
All other emails (yahoo!, hotmail, etc.) display the emails in html, only
netscape that can't interpret it?
Is there some way so that netscape understand the emails and displayed it
correctly?
Am i providing enough information?
BTW, I'm using PHP v4.2.3
TIA,
Cordially yours,

I know PHP is pretty versatile and all that, but I'm still amazed at the kinds
of things that people want PHP to do when there are better and more
appropriate alternatives:
The simplest requiring no more than a shell script is to run a cron job which
figures out whether sshd is running, if not start it.
Further up the scale you can use xinetd.
Even further, you can use something like daemontools to supervise your "must
run" daemons.

Once again, I've managed to kill SSHd on my server. Hurray! >_<
What I want to do now, is make a script start it again. I could just
reboot the machine the hard way or carry a monitor/keyboard there, but I
don't wanna do that at 7am.
System: Linux Slackware 8.1
What I have and can access:
Apache + PHP 4.3.2
FTP
I got into this problem another time, just then the server was in a
remote location but I managed to get a friend to drive me there and I
started it blindfolded (no monitor, just keyboard). Then I called
another friend while I was there to see if it got back up or not.
Anyway; I want to make some sort of PHP backdoor to start sshd again. As
far as I know, only root can do so though so just an exec() won't do.
How can I switch to root, enter the password and then start sshd via a
PHP script that I run via the web?
I'd appriciate your help.

Yeah, but as it is, I can't start those things :P
I must be root to do so. Apache is not running as root.

Apache not running as root is a good thing, but probably is...
Since it appears you are not the admin of the box, ask them to install
Webmin (http://www.webmin.org/webmin)
and to give your userid access to the ssh component.

What I'm saying is apache/php has little part to play in system maintenance.
Those solutions I proposed are started by root, once they've started they
will (hopefully) ensure that sshd would be running, and auto-restarted
whenever it is stopped (or in the case of using xinetd, whenever it is
needed).

One of the first things I did was change the error reporting to E_ALL (and
now have it on E_ALL permanently), but I initialise all my variable names

The problem with all this, as Mike has suggested, is that the errors you get
change as you change totally unrelated parts of the code - reducing it down
seems likely to "fix" them even if I leave in the bits that I suspect cause
it! Hopefully I'll have a bit of time to see what I can do, though.

Brad, you're missing a buch of headers probably causing your email to be
dropped somewhere regarded spam (especially Hotmail is quite picky about the
headers).
Try and send these headers (fourth argument in mail() function.
$headers = "MIME-Version: 1.0\r\n";
$headers .= "Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1\r\n";
$headers .= "X-Priority: 3\r\n";
$headers .= "X-MSMail-Priority: Normal\r\n";
$headers .= "X-Mailer: PHP/".phpversion()."\r\n"; //I use this, I'm not
sure if you really need this header
$headers .= "From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]";
$headers .= "Reply-to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]";
$headers .= "Return-path: [EMAIL PROTECTED]";
$headers .= "Error-to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]";
if (mail($mail_to, $mail_subject, $mail_body,$headers)) {
echo ("success");
} else {
echo ("failed");
}

Well, I don't know what Michael is doing, but we found that mail tended
to be slow. If we didn't wait for each message, we tended to cause
errors. So we wrote a service that called a PHP routine to ship the
messages one at a time, and check that the process had completed for
each message before sending the next.
You can get mass-mailing systems written in Perl, I think there are now
some available for PHP.

Any of these will work:
<input type='text' name='foo' value='<?php echo $foo; ?>' size='20' />
<input type='text' name='foo' value='<?=$foo?>' size='20' />
<? echo "<input type='text' name='foo' value='{$foo}' size='20' />"; ?>
easy :)

Looks like that script was pulled from Welling and Thomson's textbook on PHP
and mySQL.
I've got the first edition - SAMS.
You need to create a file called:
orders.txt
which which would reside in the path of your argument to fopen().

Is this also inside a Virtual Host? If so, you need to explicitly set open_basedir
none in all other VHosts. Even if not, this problem may be related -- it may be worth
trying the effect of explicitly setting open_basedir using php_admin_value for other
directories, and especially your document root.
The VHosts thing is not regarded as a PHP bug, but a configuration error. However, if
you are only setting open_basedir on a per-directory basis, that does sound like a
possible bug to me -- might be worth firing off a report at http://bugs.php.net if you
can pin it down accurately.
Cheers!

Hi,
I must say I don't agree. Although it seems odd, I received a DNS error a
while ago while creating a script using the GD library. If the script wasn't
there, I would've got a 404. That particular script was generating problems
with Apache somehow causing my browser to display a DNS error. Run on a
local Windows box, it crashed Apache.

the script unless the script isn't there.

Let's be clear -- a DNS error has nothing to do with the script (whether it is
there or not). In fact it has nothing to do with your webserver at all.

Internet Explorer calls it a 'DNS or server error'. Excuse me for shortening
it to a 'DNS error' (while it's probably a 'server error').

I have been following this list for the past 1 year. I find it very useful.
Just by following the discussions for a couple of months one can understand a
great deal about PHP.
What I proposed to do is to send this mail to the list every week. Those who
do not want to be bothered just filter out the [Newbie Guide] mails. Please
feel free to add more points and send to the list.
====================================================
1. If you have any queries/problems about PHP try http://www.php.net/manual
first. You can download a copy and use it offline also.
2. If you can not get answer here try http://www.google.com next. Try
searching for "php YOUR QUERY" and you may be lucky to get an answer within
the first 10 results.
3. Glancing through the list archive at http://www.php.net/archives, should
answer almost all common problems.
4. If you are stuck with a script and do not understand what is wrong, instead
of posting the whole script, try doing some research yourself. One useful
trick is to print the variable, sql query using print or echo command and
check whether you get what you expected.
After diagnosing the problem, send the details of your efforts (following
steps 1,2 & 3) and ask for help in the list.
5. Provide a clear descriptive subject line. Avoid general subjects like
"Help!!", "A Question" etc.
6. When you want to start a new topic, open a new mail and enter the mailing
list address [EMAIL PROTECTED] instead of replyting to an existing
thread and replacing the subject and body with your message.
Hope you have a good time programming with PHP.

Personally, I think one of the worst replies someone on the list can do when
someone new asks a question is send only a link to the manual. It's
presumption that everyone will understand the way the manual is worded.
There have been times when it's confused me and I needed another perspective
on the topic. If you find the question juvenile or unworthy of anything
more than a link to the manual, don't reply to it.

First off all, let me thank Jay for all his efforts! Compiling PHP and
then Apache is just to complicated for me. I would love to learn all of
this stuff, but, I don't have the time to do it. (and that is a petty).
Any how, the problem is still there. Apache and PHP are running well,
but no FDF/PDF support what-so-ever.
Anybody knows someone in the Miami/Dade area that I can hire to manage
this server? And, by the way, I need 2 PHP programers for a huge
project, starting next week! Email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] for more

I have a application, almost like a web portal. I am working on
developing a version for public use. And have run into some development
questions.
The application is split into 4 major parts.
Plugins -- A class that can be used by one or more modules.
Example: A PDF generator.
Modules -- A Class of commands that do a specific task.
Example: A Work flow controller.
User Information -- An object that holds all the current user
information including the user access levels.
Portal Controller -- A main object that controls all plugins, modules,
and user information.
A complex Portal with complex modules can begin to slow things down,
especially when you start to have 800 + users and thousands and
thousands of lines of code loaded for each user.
My question is this:
Is there a way in PHP to have the "Portal Controller" run seperately
with out needing to load or include the objects for every user? I was
thinking of something like
http://mysite/PortalController?Action=GetUserAccessRules
Are there other ways to do this? Would this speed anything up or would
it slow it down. Just trying to find a good way to keep code seperated
and speed up access on large sites.
Any input you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

The problem is that mysql_fetch_array() doesn't return an empty
array.
<quote mysql_fetch_array>
Returns an array that corresponds to the fetched row, or FALSE if
there are no more rows.
</quote>
Thus it explains why the size of returns 1.
the "b:0;" basically means that this var is of type boolean and has
a value of 0.

the same time, while still making all records available for regular
visitors to read?

I don't want to use iFrames.. is there any other way?
I want to use my own php counter with lil information.. which updates
the database on page load incrementing the counter and catching the few
Server Variables.. and just display the Hits on that page.
However.. that page is an HTML page.. not a php page.
Is there any solution to this?

Write a PHP script that makes the image for you using GD or Imagemagick,
then just include it like any other image:
<img src="counter.php">

Well actually I did this with a shopping cart application I'm building
right now. But the code is not nearly modular enough to send it around.
So here is a link to the class I used: (should get you started)
(watch wrap)
http://simon.incutio.com/demos/spellcheck/SpellChecker.class.php.txt
Let me know if you have any general questions.
I had to modify his class a bit. Take a look at his class and then email
me and I'll send my modified version.
Chris.

Trying to compile PHP 4.3.2 with xmlrpc. The xmlrpc manual page says no external
libraries are needed yet configure complains with
checking whether to enable XML support... yes
checking external libexpat install dir... no
checking for XMLRPC-EPI support... yes
checking libexpat dir for XMLRPC-EPI... yes
checking iconv dir for XMLRPC-EPI... yes
configure: error: XML-RPC support requires libexpat. Use --with-expat-dir=<DIR>
Apache2 has a bundled expat, as does PHP. So do I need to install yet another
libexpat and have both apache and php look externally? Why won't xml-rpc use the
expat bundled with PHP?
Thanks.

Hey ..
I am having a problem when i try to pull an image that has been stored in
MS SQL Server from displaying properly. I know, its a waste of space to
store the actual image in SQL, but this is the way it needs to be done to
be compatible with some of the other systems. Anyway, if you have any
input at all as to what could be wrong, please let me know. I will
provide my system information and code below for your review. Thanks.
Platform: Linux Redhat 9
PHP Version 4.3.1
FreeTDS 0.61 (used to connect to Microsoft SQL Server)
SQL Server 2000
Here is my code (except for connection information, of course)
<showpic.php>
<?
$eventid=$_GET[picid];
$dsource = "<SQL IP>";
$sqluser = "<Username>";
$sqlpass = "<Password>";
$catalog = "<Database>";
[EMAIL PROTECTED]($dsource,$sqluser,$sqlpass) or die("Could not connect
to the database");
@mssql_select_db($catalog) or die ("invalid");
$getpic = mssql_query("select Picture from GetPics where Id='$eventid'")
or die("Query is not achievable by SQL Server") or die("invalid");
while($rs=mssql_fetch_array($getpic))
{
header("Content-type: image/jpeg");
$image=$rs["Picture"];
print $image;
}
?>
The following is the tag inserted to my webpage:
<img src="showpic.php?picid=1">
Please let me know if you have any ideas, and if you dont, thanks for your
help anyway.
