Do you know if this is specifically in regard to the worker MPM under Apache and not the prefork MPM? Or does this not have anything to do with threading?

The combination is simply not production-quality yet. It has not had the attention and Q&A that Apache1/PHP has had, and there are also known issues, especially on UNIX with the combination.
