Just my humble opinion, of course, but I think you did the job quickly considering what you were given to start with. $40/hour is pretty cheap, too. No one likes paying and it always seems like a "little change" to those on the outside. It would of been hard to nail down a contract given the circumstances, but that's what you should have done. Always get it in writing.
