Compiled php with an extern GD lib works. I have the feeling that you should first fix your setup. I believe 4.3.9 adds support for writing GIFs, but not GIF animations. A bug in the manual? ..it suggests it is possible to compile PHP with a different GD library than the one PHP provides as an extension.
