i had exactly the same problems:
php 4.3.4/oracle 8.1.6/openldap 2.1.22/solaris 8
every time i opened phpQLadmin, php crashed.
4.3.0 worked fine, 4.3.4 did not.
solution:
i used openldap 2.1.20 instead.
same as on uw-imap, where any version different from 2001final (=RC1)
caused crashes, i assume that from now on, there is a 'preferred
version' of openldap too.
could version info for tested libs be included in the online
documentation? i recompiled 6 times until i came back to 2001final -
and 4 times until i found a correct openldap (2.0.x had other
problems)
in situations like that, one appreciates any hint for a working php...

FYI I am trying to connect to Active Directory not an LDAP server, if
that makes any difference or if you can test against and AD server as
well.

What version of openldap are you using with that and on what OS?

Reopen IF openldap folks tell this isn't bug in their stuff.
(FYI: I can NOT reproduce this with PHP 4.3.4 and latest Openldap)
And btw. You need to always delete config.cache before reconfigure..

I am using a conf script I have used since 4.1, that has not changed
other than the addition of GD last month.
Everything has worked fine with this build, up until 4.3.4
At the point of failur NOTHING had changed.
Here is exactly what happened:
step 1) download 4.3.4 tar gz
step 2) run build script (unchanged from 4.3.2-RC build )
step 3) make install
step 4) restart apache
step 5) check php scripts and info.php
step 6) write down SEG FAULT problems
step 7) cd back to 4.3.2-RC
step 8) run the same build script
step 9) make install ; restart apache
step 10) test ldap php script, everything works
step 11) report bug to bugs.php.net
step 12) ...
You see, I can go back and forth between the 2 versions, and always get
the same result, using the same build script, and nothing else changes
at all on the system.

You're 100% sure NOTHING else has changed in your system?
No related files have changed? (any header, library in your system?)
Are you trying with fresh compile of the older PHP version?
Using EXACTLY same configure line?
I'm pretty sure this is openldap bug..
