Apache -X worked for me as well. I'm using Apache 2.0.43 and PHP 4.3.0,
and without the -X switch it didn't work.

I got corrupted output (as described above), but there wasn't any
problems with small amounts of data. When a given query (to an Access
database) returned many results (about >70), the page reloaded several
times and either resulted in partially corrupted output or a 404.

Try Apache 1.3.24 and PHP 4.2.1.
Reopen if problem persists.

Sounds like it is related to Bugs #15613 and #15245.
This really needs sorting out for PHP 4.2

no, you have found a workaround that hides the actual problem for now,
maybe due to reduced output buffer sizes ...

I have find a ""solution"" :
I have activates gzip compression (see php.ini) and it works.....
