And, it may also be you're using the old socket function from < 4.1.0
days which have been obsoleted by the new socket_*() funcs (see
manual).

i have compiled php 4.1.1 with the following options:
./configure --enable-track-vars --enable-sockets --enable-ftp
--with-mysql --with-psql --with-sybase=/usr/local/freetds
--with-imap=../imap --with-png-dir --with-gd --with-zlib --with-openssl
--with-gettext --enable-calendar --with-kerberos
--with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs 

sockets don't work. phpinfo(); show socket support enable
