I ghosted-out from this thread with my tail between my legs, because the only collegue who had access to the affected machine had no time to spare and then went of vacation. He has returned now, and I have had the luck to find the problem. The log had the following messages: LOG : disabling statistics collector for lack of working socket WARNING: autovacuum not started because of misconfiguration Asking around, I was informed that an ugnly cructch had been instated on the machine: the localhost loopback removed from /etc/hosts, to work around some network-related problem. I explained to the person responsible that it is the wrong way of doing one's work, and demanded they return localhost to the hosts file and restart the network. track_counts is on now. -- () ascii ribbon campaign -- against html e-mail /\ www.asciiribbon.org -- against proprietary attachments
