Not "forwarded" (which has a special meaning in DNS), rather "sent" to the
public DNS system (i.e. recursion to the Root servers, then (cc)TLD, ...)

In other words: there's no need for Google's public DNS (8.8.8.8) to be involved.

pdns-recursor, by itself, can do exactly what Google's 8.8.8.8 service does - which is to find authoritative servers for the queries you send, and cache the answers.
