As for performance, I hate to say it (because I do like my A 50/2.8 quite a bit, for a compact go-anywhere macro lens, with a beautiful manual focus feel), the F 50/2.8 that I once had (and, therefore, also the FA 50/2.8, although I have never owned the FA version) is indeed a sharper lens design (although tactually annoying to use, compared to the delightful A version).
