Harald, I've only been on the island since last fall, but one of the few things I've
had a chance to see is Cathedral Grove, near Nanaimo. It's a primeval-looking forest
with huge trees, big enough that I felt like an ant when I was there.

On the west side of the island is Long Beach (32km long), but I haven't seen it yet.
If you're into gardens and such, Butchart Gardens is a short drive north of Victoria,
and Butterfly Gardens (featuring exotic butterflies, naturally) is across the road.

Within Victoria, there are two small mountains (big hills?), Mount Tolmie and Mount
Douglas, that overlook the city. You can drive to the top of Mt. Tolmie, and almost
to the top of Mt. Doug, and walk the rest of the way (not far) for some spectacular
views.

For underwater scenery, there's Undersea Gardens, in the Inner Harbor (the center of
Victoria) next to the wax museum. You walk twenty-five steps down into the submerged
part of the structure, which lets you look at the sea life at a depth of fifteen or
twenty feet, including fish and octopi. The North Pacific has the biggest octopi in
the world.

If you like kayaking, you can rent a 1-person or 2-person kayak and paddle around the
inner harbor, a popular thing to do. There's also scuba diving, and there's even a
scuba center on the beach at Ogden Point, only a kilometer from downtown. That's all
I can think of right now, but I'm sure there's more.

If you contact me off-list, I can give you my phone number, if you'd like to get
together for coffee and a yak about cameras.
