One of the possible causes is oxidation of the contact surfaces of the selector switch below this dial. Giving it some vigorus exercise might scratch this oxidation from the contacts.
I had a similar prob with the rear thumbwheel of my *stDS which had gone totally erratic. A miniscule (!) amount of DeoxIT injected into the opening of the wheel followed by some exercise cured this and the camera still works flawlessly to this day. Ralf -- Ralf R.
