It may also be the due to the supply chain crap Covid introduced. I've noticed other inexplicable shortages

It's probably just laziness. I hadn't really looked on-line. When I need a mouse, I'm used to just going to Staples or Office Depot and buying a generic corded wheel mouse.

I really should just go on Amazon, find one I like and buy a dozen of them.

I can't use those track-pads that come with laptops, so the first thing I do is disable it and get an external mouse ... which is where I developed an aversion to wireless mice. Early generation wireless mice were pretty awful.

The last time I had to buy a replacement mouse for my laptop, I was out of town and the only place I could find one was Walmart, and I ended up with an expensive gaming mouse (which ain't one whit better than the generic mice I usually get from Staples/Office Depot).

That is remarkable, as the major mail-order firms here can also supply a
wide selection of wired ones within one day.
Apart from the advantage of not having to change batteries, a wired mouse
doesn't have the habit of dropping from my desk on the floor ...

Around here the stores are pushing wireless really hard. The stores that
stock wired mice are usually out of them.

My wireless USB mouse didn't work well. I bought last week a Logitech

silent wired USB mouse having 1.8 meter wire for 12 euro.
These wired ones for office applications are not at all hard to get here.

Wired USB mouse, no batteries. I don't think new computers come with the
PS/2 mouse or keyboard ports. This computer has what look like HDMI
ports where I'd expect them to be on the mother board.

Clean, basic scroll mouse on a clean mouse pad. Optical sensor is clean.
I haven't tried moving the mouse to a different USB port because they're
all full, so I'd have to move everything.

The mouse works Ok on my other computer ... I thought to check that. The
mouse from the other computer IS a PS/2 mouse so it doesn't work on this
computer.

Windoze thinks the drivers are up to date. If it was any of the easy
answers I'd have already found it.

I hope I don't have to buy another mouse. These plain vanilla wired mice
are getting hard to find.
