Killing all insects in a home garden lawn doesn't sound like the way forward for this world.

This type of damselfly is probably European/ North Africa based only and it is the only one here that lays eggs on living branches of trees near the water side. That makes it easy for me to follow and photograph every year all their social and sexual interactions near a drainage canal bordering my garden. With a wet spring and early summer we had plenty of dragonflies and damselflies. Butterflies are slowly catching up now with somewhat warmer weather.

I have seen NO dragonflies or damselflies around here this summer. I
suspect that has something to do with the fact that most of my neighbors
have signed up for these pesticide services that spray your lawn every
month. They have knocked on my door at least 6 times last year and this
one, but I refuse. First, I think it unnecessary, especially since we have
had almost no gypsy moths or Japanese beetles for the past several years,
and second, I think it bad for my dog and for the butterflies I try to
attract.

The pesticides haven't eliminated the cicadas, however. They are making a
racket out there all day long right now.

Thanks all for comments!
Ann, the bottom left gal was fully in line in an earlier pic but I
moved my camera position to separate it from the background and that
may have slightly disturbed it.
And damselflies don't listen to my commands. They don't even hear
sounds.:)

wonderful shot! but you need to the gal on the bottom left is out of
form -- she'll never make the chorus line that way :-)
