After Rosenthal took his ICONIC photo he took a second photo, known as the "Gung
Ho" photo:

When Rosenthal was later asked if the photo had been staged, this is the photo
Rosenthal thought of when he answered "yes".

But Rosenthal DID NOT stage the flag raising photo, and he never claimed it was
