Ten years ago today our lives were fractured as much as our city when a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck at 12:51pm.
185 lives were lost in that event along with thousands injured. Countless buildings have since been demolished, mostly in the city centre. The central city is still undergoing a radical transformation. There are now lots of new buildings, several repaired and strengthened heritage buildings, and many empty lots being used for parking. It's slowly getting easier to navigate as the surroundings change (we don't go into the central city very often). There are still a few derelict sites which everyone is getting increasingly frustrated about. Life feels as though it's largely back to normal (even despite Covid-19) but the scars will always remain. I took my daughter to the official memorial service today. My own life has changed massively since then and it's hard to believe the past decade has disappeared so quickly. Given where I was at the time I could easily have not made it home that day. These are just a few phone snapshots centred around the memorial. Only the last one was taken today. http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/1092/#peso http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/1093/#peso http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/1094/#peso http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/1095/#peso There are some images comparing then-and-now in this article. I went past several of those scenes as I made my way back to the office then home on the day. https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/436822/then-and-now-how-the-2011-christchurch-earthquakes-changed-the-city Cheers, Dave -- %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List To unsubscribe send an email to [email protected] to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
