thanks Ann... i looked up loggerhead shrike. i thought it looked similar to one of our other winter migrants the great grey shrike. and sure enough, wikipedia tells me that the great grey shrike "forms a superspecies with its parapatric southern relatives, the Iberian grey shrike (L. meridionalis), the Chinese grey shrike (L. sphenocerus) and the loggerhead shrike (L. ludovicianus). "
