Why not? There are plenty of places in the world where barley and
wheat aren't grown and they make beer out of whatever's available (and
have done for centuries). Sometimes it's other grains (like millet —
I'm told millet beer is served hot!) sometimes it's fruit (like
bananas). I have a fantastic genuine Belgian ale in the fridge that's
made with traditional malt, but with cherries added. Great stuff.
(more than 5.3% ABV, though!)
