It goes beyond that, although you're correct. As Cotty said, we live in a representative democracy. We vote for these people to represent our views, so for them to call a referendum is an abdication of responsibility - it's their job to make decisions, and to make them in the best interests of _all_ their constituents, not just the ones who voted for them. This is why it is never a wasted vote, even if your preferred candidate doesn't stand a chance of winning - your voice should be heard.
