(K-5, DA 17-70) Historical note: The current cathedral was finished in 1220, and apart from some damage during the French Revolution (which the townsfolk stopped) has stood intact since. In World War II, the cathedral escaped bomb damage by chance (the stained glass had been removed and stored elsewhere), but in August 1944 a company of American troops was ordered to destroy it, based on information that the Nazi army was still there. A colonel (Wellborn Griffith) and his driver motored over to the cathedral alone, searched it from the crypt to the tops of the towers, found no enemy, and refused the order to destroy it. The town was captured peacefully. Col. Griffith was killed in action later the same day 3.5 km away, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, and the French Croix de Guerre and Legion d’Honneur posthumously.
