This e-mail won't go. Trying again with no subject line.

"Repairman told me the factory specifications, in his words, "had some
slack"."

When you read some or the lens reviews, the truth of this statement is quite
obvious. While there are mostly good versions of lenses, some excellent too,
there are invariably terrible ones which are often the subjects of reviews
leading to disproportionately poor overall lens rating. e.g.:

The one I had was pretty good.

Funny you should say that. I brought the FA*400/5.6 to USA in 2004 (for
a roadtrip involving the Grandfather Mountain Nature Photo Week-end),
and managed to drop it from two meters height onto asphalt. The impact
bent the whole optical tube and broke the lens shade, but left the glass
intact.
When returned from repair, it had been collimated and calibrated
properly and was noticeably sharper than before. Repairman told me the
factory specifications, in his words, "had some slack".

The calibration/collimation was a small part of the work and would have
been worth the while even for a lens within specification.
