From what I know, all reports from JDP are based on the owner
(satisfaction) surveys. That is the in the core of their business model.
The difference is in areas/parameters in which the satisfaction is
evaluated.
With respect to cars, there are these car ratings that JDP produces:
1. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS)
2. Initial Quality Study (IQS)
3. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout Study (APEAL)
4. Customer Service Index Study (CSI)

From what you described (it was just released, and the relative position
of the makes), - I think you are referring to the IQS:

Indeed, Ford is high there...
In combination with the VDS results I've linked earlier (see the
link below) this means that the new cars look and perform well, but they
are not as dependable over the subsequent 3 years.
Interesting, that Lexus and Jaguar have the opposite trend: owners are not
as happy with them in the first year. (I suspect the reaction is: "I spent
this much for this premium car, but it is not that much better than Kia
that is less then half of that in price!") But then, over the subsequent 3
years, they are happy they don't have as many problems to deal with. So,
these two cars are rather low in IQS, but rather high in VDS rankings.
What is interesting, is that Toyota Camry is high in both. --
The most reliable but relatively boring car, IMHO.
(We had one for about 7 years).
Interesting materials for thoughts...

Paul,
First of all thanks for (unintended) reminder to look at J.D. Power reports
(I am looking for a car now).
I didn't do an extensive search, but this listing that I found:
http://www.jdpower.com/ratings/study/Vehicle-Dependability-Study-%28VDS%29-by-Make/1881ENG
shows Ford among the same "bottom 10" (~#6 from the bottom) ranking on
dependability, below Subaru.
You might be referring to a different parameter...
Or, there might be a more fine-grain ranking, as this table is rather crude.

I have no idea what the problem was with Ecosport, but Ford does just fine
here. Subaru, on the other hand was among the ten most problematic cars in
the latest J.D. Power survey. Audi and Infiniti made the bottom ten as well.
