i would buy a suitably old Mac or PC; the PowerBook 1400 might be a fun way to do it, but if you are going to use it a lot i'd go with something faster like a PowerMac G4 or G5 with a stock or third-party SCSI card — i'd look for a used one that includes OS X 10.4 or 10.5 (the maximum) install discs; these are relatively easy to network with your other machines — you could put it headless under your desk and control it from your primary computer via screen sharing
