You may be able to save a bit of cash by fitting a smaller SSD.  I recently 
bought a new iMac and chose the base 256Gb SSD since the bulk of my data is on 
external drives.  It's not quite half full at the moment.

Regarding SSD reliability, just make sure you have good backups :)

I don't know how much longer that machine will remain supported by Mac OS X.  I 
was running El Capitan on my 2008 Macbook Pro but I don't think Sierra would 
have supported it.
