Depends on your operating system. Some versions of MS Windows are very picky, some like Win2K just fall back to defaults and ask for missing drivers. Some early versions simply hang. Not so familiar with, but the same holds true for different distributions of, Linux, some are a relative joy to swap boot drives others are near impossible.
