Kim,
I don't quite understand what you mean by "hurting Pentax in the long
run"? In a sense, buying any used lens is less profitable for the
company than if one purchased a new lens (which then causes the
retailer to purchase more new lenses for their stock).

Economies seem to work even with used items on the market, because
some people will sell their used stuff in order to fund their purchase
of new items. So your purchase of the used item *indirectly* helps the
company sell the new item.

Not everybody, for a variety of reasons, wants to purchase new things.
Perhaps they can't afford them; perhaps they hate the idea of losing
value through depreciation the moment that item is used; perhaps they
are most interested in "bang for the buck". I'm a "bang for the buck"
guy. I still have never purchased a new Pentax lens. But Pentax has
made plenty of money off of me because I'm now on my 6th different
Pentax body (all of which were purchased new).

Pentax has (apparently) long ago fixed the SDM problem by using better
components, But that doesn't mean that there aren't (literally
uncountable numbers of) lenses out there with the old components that
still may fail. It is each failure, which causes dismay to the owner
that hurts Pentax, because each time somebody complains on some forum
about it, it gives the impression that the problem still exists in SDM
products being made today. That's what hurts Pentax, in the long run
and in the short run.
