Tuxis Island is privately owned by the Madison Beach Club, and it's
"forbidden" to trespass, and has been as long as I can remember. However
since it's an easy Row, Sail or Swim from the mainland that didn't stop
local kids visiting to do what kids do when out of reach of authority,
(well that was true when I was a kid, it appears we were made of sterner
stuff than the current generation).
In recent years it's become a rookery for a number of species from Ibis
to Egrets to Herons and the occasional Cormorant or two. Which would
never have happened in the past, the birds would have avoided our
parties like the plague.
One of the traditions that has been maintained however is the lighted
Christmas tree, which has to be replaced yearly, as the one visible at
the end of the Island won't grow out of the rock. I don't know exactly
how they light the tree, electricity isn't available there as far as I
know.
It is however long since time to take down the tree.
