This is no longer true, unfortunately.

Probably for the same reasons Apple can't make a 5k retina monitor for use with MacBook Pros... Thunderbolt 2 doesn't have enough bandwidth to do it.

You'll need Thunderbolt 3 on both computer and monitor for it.
